Series of theory-based didactic lectures
Hands on practical ultrasound guided Seldinger insertion on manikins
Hands on practical fresh human cadaveric tissue dissection & drain insertion


This course is aimed at anyone who may be required to insert chest drains. The session begins with a series of lectures giving the theoretical knowledge of chest drain insertion including anatomy, technique, risks etc. The candidates then practice ultrasound guided Seldinger insertion on high-quality, realistic manikins as well as on human cadavers, as well as learning the open surgical technique of thoracotomy insertion on cadavers. The course helps towards achieving level 1 competence in ultrasound guided chest drains. 3 CPD points from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd).
